Essex County has 8 colleges and they are the following: Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Essex County College, Montclair State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University - Newark, Seton Hall University, and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Essex County College 22-acre main campus is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Approximately 25,000 students enroll each year, including students from more than 40 foreign countries Essex County College curriculum features more than 70 majors and 564 courses. Students can obtain their Associate in Arts (A. A.) and Associate in Science (A. S.) degrees for transfer to four-year colleges, or they can pursue Associate in Applied Science (A. A. S.)

The main campus in Newark features a multilevel megastructure covering three city blocks, a two-level multipurpose Physical Education Building/ Child Development Center complex, the Center for Technology, and the Clara E. Dasher Student Center. Among the resources of the 502,000 square foot megastructure are state-of-the-art laboratories, high tech classrooms with advanced teaching modalities, the Mary B. Burch Theater for the Performing Arts, and a newly renovated library equipped with online public access catalog stations, a computer lab offering instruction in information literacy, and extensive resource materials.

Caldwell College is a Catholic, co-educational, four-year liberal arts institution. The 70-acre wooded campus was founded by the Sisters of Saint Dominic in 1939. This College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities, chartered by the State of New Jersey, and registered with the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Over 2,200 men and women are currently enrolled.

Caldwell offers 27 major programs, each supported by fully-qualified faculty and up-to-date facilities. Students can choose from BA, BS, and BFA programs in the arts and sciences, computer science, business, fine arts, and medical technology. Teaching certification can be earned in elementary education or in a variety of K-12 and secondary subjects. Caldwell College also offers Post-Master programs in Art Therapy, Professional Licensing Credits for Psychologists, School Counseling, and Supervisor's Certification for educators and those in educational support services.

Rutgers University - Newark was founded in 1936 consist of 37 acres and 31 buildings. This college offers many undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the arts, life and physical sciences, business, nursing, social sciences, law and criminal justice. Its Student Body consists of 6,784 undergraduate students and 3,681 graduate students. The following Degrees are offered: B.A., B.S., B.F.A., M.A., M.A.C.C.Y., M.A.L.S., M.A.T., M.S., M.B.A., M.P.A., M.P.H., M.Q.F., J.D., Ph.D.
